“Cock-eye Squid”
Upon reaching the seafloor at a depth of 561 meters (1,841 feet) for the first dive of the 2023 Shakedown + EXPRESS West Coast Exploration, we were treated with a sighting of this squid (Stigmatoteuthis dofleini), who appeared to “tiptoe” across the seafloor before moving along. These squid belong to the family Histioteuthidae, who have earned the common name “cock-eye squid” because in all species, the left eye is at least twice the diameter of the right eye — a feature that is indeed noticeable in this video.
