World of Water: September 17, 2017

On September 17, 2017, during the Deep-Sea Symphony: Exploring the Musicians Seamounts expedition, the team conducted the first-ever remotely operated vehicle dive from NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer dedicated exclusively to exploring the water column. The dive consisted of three passes through the water column at depths between 300 and 1,000 meters (984 and 3,280 feet).

During the dive, the team observed a diversity of siphonophores (including several that were very large), jellyfish, and ctenophores. Other organisms documented were an abundance of bristlemouths (Cyclothone sp.), arrow worms, larvaceans, and shrimp, as well as two types of squids, a snipe eel, and a lancetfish.
