Learn about Underwater Robots

Underwater robots, such as remotely operated vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles, are essential tools for ocean exploration. These robots can explore areas of the ocean that are too dangerous or too difficult for humans to go. Underwater robots come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be outfitted with numerous sensors and tools to collect extensive amounts of data from deep-sea environments.

The team from the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration prepare remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer for a “dunk test” in preparation for the start of the Seascape Alaska 3: Aleutians Remotely Operated Vehicle Exploration and Mapping expedition.

Collecting a Sample

The manipulator arm of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer reaches out to collect the first sample of the 2023 Shakedown + EXPRESS West Coast Exploration expedition at a depth of 3,952 meters (2.46 miles). While the focus of the dive was on “shaking down” the ROVs, the team was happy to collect this zoanthid growing on a dead sponge stalk.
