September 29, 2020: Amakasu Maru

On August 11, 2016, during the Deepwater Wonders of Wake expedition, we conducted a dive to search for the Japanese Destroyer, Hayate, which sank during the Battle of Wake Island reportedly in the area investigated during the dive. Instead, the team discovered and explored a Japanese cargo ship, Amakasu Maru No.1, which was a Japanese water tanker that was sunk by a U.S. submarine in 1942. In this image, remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer comes upon the bow of the Amakasu Maru.
