During the 2012 Gulf of Mexico expedition, while exploring within the West Florida Escarpment Canyon in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico approximately 190 nautical miles west of Tampa, Florida, the team imaged this octocoral in the genus Iridigorgia. It stood at an impressive height of over 90 centimeters (3 feet) tall.
