Sea Cucumber
This holothurian, or sea cucumber, was observed swimming in the water column just above the seafloor at a depth of 2,674 meters (1.66 miles) during Dive 04 of the second Voyage to the Ridge 2022 expedition. We saw several other sea cucumbers during the dive, though most were laying on the seafloor, which is where these animals tend to spend most of their time, feeding off of surface sediments. As evidenced by this video, they can, however, swim if they want to get somewhere more quickly or evade a predator.
