Small Black Smoker Hydrothermal Vent
Heated water “shimmers” as it is emitted from a small black smoker hydrothermal vent seen at a depth of 2,947 meters (1.83 miles) near the end of Dive 02 of the second Voyage to the Ridge 2022 expedition. If you look closely, you will see several small caridean shrimp crawling over the chimney structure; these shrimp rely on chemosynthesis for food. The variation in the color of the vent structure is from the white mineral anhydrite (calcium sulfate) and oxidized sulfides (yellow to brownish red). These vents can reach upwards of 350°C (662°F), although the highest temperature reading made here was 54°C (129°F).
