Hole at the Bottom of the Sea
The Blake Plateau is large, and NOAA Ocean Exploration has mapped a lot of it. So, when we saw what appeared to be a sinkhole on the seafloor, the only one of its kind in the region (that we’ve found), we had to check it out. Dive 08 of Windows to the Deep 2021 took us on a journey to the bottom of this sinkhole south of the Blake Spur and then up along its side. Among the fascinating geology and marine life, we found human debris, including a soccer ball. How the sinkhole formed is still unknown, but we collected geological samples to help scientists solve the mystery of this solo sinkhole.
