Big Jellyfish
During Dive 07 of the 2023 Shakedown + EXPRESS West Coast Exploration expedition, we encountered two of these jellyfish that measured nearly 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) across. While their description could be narrowed down to simply “big red jellyfish,” scientists were able to identify the jellies as belonging to the genus Tiburonia (likely T. granrojo). Being able to see the jellies in this posture, with their oral arms pointed upwards, provided scientists with a unique view under the umbrella region of the animals. The white balls visible through the subumbrella (the concave undersurface of the jelly) may be brooded juveniles. It has been suspected that this genus does brood its young, but this has not been confirmed, making these observations potentially even more exciting!
