Octopus
Morning stretch? New yoga moves? A predatory stance? A defensive posture? Scientists weren’t sure exactly what this octopus (Muusoctopus sp.), seen at a depth of 2,806 meters (1.74 miles) during Dive 05 of the Seascape Alaska 3 expedition, was up to. While it is often the discovery of previously unknown species that capture headlines, observations of unknown behaviors are an important part of ocean exploration as well, as each newly seen behavior increases our understanding of life in the deep ocean.
