NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer: Participation: NOAA Ocean Exploration
Welcome! We are excited to have you participate in expeditions on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer with NOAA Ocean Exploration. Below are some links necessary to participate in expeditions either from shore or while sailing aboard NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.
General Okeanos Explorer Information
Call for Input: NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer 2024 Hawai’i and Johnston Atoll Expeditions
As part of our community-driven exploration model, NOAA Ocean Exploration invites you to submit exploration recommendations for mapping and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.
NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer: 2024 Expeditions Overview
From April 2024 through November 2024, NOAA Ocean Exploration and partners will conduct a series of telepresence-enabled ocean exploration expeditions on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer to improve knowledge about unexplored and poorly understood deepwater areas of Hawai’i and Johnston Atoll. Data collected will establish a baseline in these areas to catalyze further exploration, research, and management activities in the region.

Information for Cruise Participants
Shore-based Participants
The information on this page will help you to participate in an Okeanos Explorer expedition remotely, from shore.
Science Lead Interest Form
NOAA Ocean Exploration typically supports three to four expeditions with remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations per year on Okeanos Explorer and brings on two members of the scientific community per expedition to serve as onboard science leads. Science leads are responsible for providing critical scientific guidance on the characterization of biological and geological discoveries that result from ROV expeditions. If you are interested in serving in the science lead role, please complete the Science Lead Interest Form. Your responses will be evaluated and a member of the office will get back to you.
Opportunities to Get Involved
Through the use of telepresence, far more people are able to participate in Okeanos Explorer expeditions than with a more “traditional” research cruise, providing many opportunities to get involved. Visit this page to learn more about how to get involved in the two primary types of Okeanos cruises conducted – mapping exploration and remotely operated vehicle cruises.
